Why Yvie Jones rejected a weight-loss ‘care plan’ from her doctor

Must Try

Gogglebox Australia star Yvie Jones underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2017 after admitting she had struggled to lose weight.

And now the 49-year-old has revealed that ‘past conditioning’ has caused her to be ‘ashamed’ of her size, leading her to reject a weight-loss care plan from her doctor.

Discussing the situation on her Nova podcast Two Girls One Pod, the media personality also slammed the BMI, or body mass index, as ‘bulls**t’.

Yvie praised her doctor, but admitted the GP ‘really focuses on my weight’ as the ’cause of all of my problems’.

‘And past conditioning is really coming through on the shame from me, and I just feel ashamed. And like, this is my fault. I’ve done this to myself,’ she explained.

‘And she’s just put me on a care plan, well booked me in to do a care plan with the dietician and the nurse to take all my, like, my weight and my inches and whatever, you know, all of the things that you need to get done. BMI, of course.’

After thinking it over, Yvie decided to call the doctor’s receptionist to cancel the care plan.

‘I have to start standing up for myself that yeah, I didn’t ask for it,’ she told co-host Angie Kent.

‘And all it would do is make me walk away feeling like I have got to lose weight to be celebrated and accepted in a health way, when I’m actually a pretty healthy human with a few problems that have nothing to do with my weight.

‘So I have to keep reminding myself and I’m really glad I had that trigger, that we were talking about this because I was like, “I’ve got to be that person who was on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! that refused to do a weigh in.”‘

Yvie then slammed BMI, despite being told by her doctors hers was ‘really high’.

‘When I’m in a doctor’s surgery and they’re going, “Your BMI is really high,” I’ve got to say the BMI was conducted and made up by four French doctors who all weighed and were the same height. And it’s a complete piece of bulls**t.’

Earlier in the episode, Yvie said: ‘Every time I go to the doctor, they just say, “Oh, you’re fat.” I could go with absolutely any ailment and they will say, “Oh, you’re a bit a fat. Maybe you should lose some weight?”‘

She said she’d received lots of messages from listeners who were in similar situations with their GPs and had all of their health problems chalked down to their size.

‘We really need to start holding them accountable, these general practitioners,’ she added.

Yvie then shared a story about a woman who was suffering from bowel cancer, but had been dismissed by her doctor because of her weight.

‘She could have lost her life because of that one doctor, because of that one judgement that they made,’ she said.

Both Yvie and Angie also encouraged people to seek referrals from GPs to see specialists.

This isn’t the first time Yvie has disregarded doctors’ orders when it comes to her weight.

Last year, she revealed she had been ‘fat shamed’ by a doctor after going in to get a lump on her neck checked.

Yvie reposted a video to Instagram of a woman who claimed doctors had dismissed her health issues because of her weight and shared her own experience of being referred to a dietitian after complaining about a lump in her neck.

‘I too have been weight shamed by my doctors for years,’ she wrote.

‘In Sydney I went in to see the doctor about a lump on my neck. Without hesitation he asked me if I could come back and see a dietitian, without telling me what was wrong with my neck.’

Yvie added: ‘I wanted to know what was wrong with my neck. F**k you. F**k doctors. And you wonder why people would rather die than be spoken so poorly to.’

The reality star also claimed fat-shaming discourages people from visiting doctors.

‘This s**t happens daily to people all over the world. Do you know how many people (myself included) stop going to doctors because they never focus on what we’re there for?’

Yvie underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2017.

She had the surgical weight-loss procedure, where the stomach is reduced to a percentage of its original size, after struggling to lose weight.

‘I’m the worst dieter,’ Yvie admitted to TV Week magazine during a 2019 interview.

‘I’ve never not eaten when I’ve wanted to. I can’t stand restricting myself.’

In addition to her thriving podcasting career, Yvie also recently starred in Channel Nine’s junk-food cooking competition Snackmasters.
