Woman, 31, is left unrecognisable after shedding 13 stone

Must Try

A woman has been left unrecognisable after shedding an impressive 13 stone – before undergoing £5,000 treatments in Turkey to remove sagging excess skin.

Leanne Kendellen, from Dublin, Ireland, was motivated to drop the weight after struggling to fit into a camping chair during a family holiday.

The stay-at-home mother, 31, who says she ‘didn’t want to be fat in her thirties and spend another decade unhappy’, went from 21st 9lbs to a healthy 9st 3lbs thanks to undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

However, her dramatic 13st weight loss, which saw her go from a size 28 to a size 8, meant that she had to tuck her saggy skin into her trousers and compared it to having a blanket on her at all times.

After flying to Turkey and spending just over £5,000 on surgery, Leanne underwent a tummy tuck, body lift and breast implants and uplift during a gruelling ten-and-a-half-hour treatment to achieve her dream body.

Leanne first began struggling with her weight at six years old – but a family camping trip left her determined to turn her life around.

She said: ‘After a camping trip with my family, my confidence was at an all-time low. My partner, John, had taken the photo of me and I immediately deleted it because I was so ashamed of how I looked.

‘Luckily it was backed up and I can reflect on the picture to see how far I’d come. My thirtieth birthday was also approaching, I knew I didn’t want to enter another decade hating my body.

‘I wanted to turn my life around and feel confident in time for turning 30 and not feel ashamed of myself while on holiday with loved ones.

‘During the trip, I’d felt like I was close to not being able to fit in the chair, and I felt mortified. I felt disgusting and I hated myself. I couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror.’

She continued: ‘I had been on the HSE – the public health care system in the Republic of Ireland – waiting list for weight loss surgery in 2015, but I knew I needed to try and take action myself while waiting for the surgery.

‘So, in January 2020 I tried to diet to try and shift some of the weight. After shedding around 4st 6lbs within a few months I then found out that I was going to be able to have a gastric bypass in July – just in time for my thirtieth birthday in December.

‘I was so happy that I was going to be able to make such a difference to my body and I wasn’t going to be spending my thirties being overweight like I had my whole life.

‘After undergoing my gastric bypass, I lost 11st 2lbs and although I felt great, I was left with so much excess skin. I haven’t been this small since I was aged eight and it was incredible, but I still didn’t feel happy.

‘So I decided to go under the knife to help me get the body I had always dreamed of.’

Leanne, who has two children, Luke, three, and Liam, two, said that her size affected every aspect of her life.

She said that her children couldn’t sit on her knee, they would be sitting on her belly and she would get out of breath by changing nappies.

Leanne (pictured) added: 'Everything was hard for me when I was big. It hurt to walk, especially pushing a buggy while carrying over 21st as well. It was awful.'

‘I didn’t want to be known as the fat mum when the kids went to school and I didn’t want them to be ashamed of me. I was unhealthy and a bad example.

‘It was a horrible way of life. I was embarrassed and thought that everyone was staring at me. It made me not want to leave the house most days and I avoided going to any family events because I didn’t want people to see me.’

Leanne would constantly overeat and spend most of each day sitting on the sofa.

After waiting for weight loss surgery for five years, Leanne was so relieved when she was eventually able to have the procedure done.

She said: ‘We would eat takeaways at least three times a week and my portion sizes were huge. I would make sandwiches with four slices of bread and I would snack on chocolate bars.

‘After having my surgery I had to focus on my protein intake, so I now make sure my meals and snacks are based on protein.

‘I was so determined to start losing weight, but I am not sure how far I would have got without having the gastric bypass. In all honestly, I never expected I would lose this much weight.’

Although she was over the moon about her colossal weight loss, Leanne found herself still feeling overweight and having to tuck her saggy skin into her clothes.

She said that she felt more self-conscious of her loose skin than she did when she was overweight.

Leanne added: ‘People would stare at me like I was abnormal. My loose skin felt like a punishment for being fat.

‘After losing so much weight, I knew I would have to have surgery, so after Christmas 2020 I began researching surgeons.

‘I booked my surgery in February 2021 and flew to Turkey in June this year to have surgery, including a tummy tuck, body lift and boob implants and uplift.

‘I wasn’t nervous at all for the ten-and-a-half-hour surgery. I wanted it done so badly because I was fed up with still being ashamed of my body even though I’d lost so much weight. I just couldn’t wait to see the outcome.

‘When I came around after the surgery and looked down at my body, I was absolutely delighted. My belly that resembled a blanket was gone and it was amazing.

‘I have nothing to bully myself about now and nothing to hold me back anymore. I feel like a brand new woman in my new body. It feels amazing to be able to wear more fashionable and feminine clothes. It’s the best feeling ever.’

Leanne is now able to run after her children, play on the swings and even go to the beach without feeling self-conscious.

She added: ‘I’m free from everything that used to hold me back. I don’t worry about what people will think of me now and I am more confident than I have ever been.

‘Even in the sweltering heat I would have covered myself up in long sleeves and trousers, and this year I have been wearing shorts, vests and skirts for the first time since being a child.

‘Sometimes my kids don’t even recognise me when we look back at old pictures. I can enjoy my thirties and special holidays with my kids knowing that there isn’t anything that I am not going to be able to do.’
